Broadcast to RadioHost Studio with djay Pro
djay Pro has no Icecast output. The working route is a virtual audio device into an encoder — how to set it up on macOS and Windows without an echo loop.
djay Pro does not have a built-in Icecast encoder, and no setting will produce one. Its streaming integrations point at music services on the input side, not at radio servers on the output side.
That does not make it unusable for radio. It makes the route one step longer: djay Pro's output goes into a virtual audio device, and an encoder reads that device and sends it to your station. This page is the honest version of that setup, including the part that goes wrong.
What you need
- An External DJ credential from Live → External DJs in Studio.
- A virtual audio device: BlackHole on macOS (free), or VB-Audio Cable on Windows (donationware).
- An encoder that can read an input device: BUTT is free and does exactly this.
macOS
- Install BlackHole 2ch and BUTT.
- Open Audio MIDI Setup and create a Multi-Output Device containing both BlackHole 2ch and your headphones or speakers. This is the step people skip, and skipping it means you stream fine and cannot hear anything yourself.
- In djay Pro, set the main output to that Multi-Output Device. Keep the pre-cueing output on your headphone interface so cueing does not go on air.
- In BUTT, set the audio input device to BlackHole 2ch, and configure the server as described in the BUTT setup guide.
- Speak or play something and check BUTT's meter moves before you connect.
A Multi-Output Device does not have a volume control. Set levels in djay Pro, and in your headphone hardware.
Windows
- Install VB-Audio Cable and BUTT.
- In djay Pro's audio settings, set the master output to CABLE Input.
- In Windows sound settings, enable Listen to this device on CABLE Output and choose your headphones, so you can still hear the mix.
- In BUTT, set the input device to CABLE Output and configure the server as in the BUTT setup guide.
If djay Pro offers an ASIO output, using it alongside a virtual cable can be awkward — WASAPI or DirectSound is the less troublesome path here.
The mistake to avoid
Do not point the encoder at "system audio" or "stereo mix" instead of the virtual device.
System audio contains everything the machine makes: notification sounds, a browser tab, the alert when a message arrives, and — if your monitoring is routed through it — the stream itself, arriving back into its own input. That last one produces a feedback loop that sounds like a metallic swelling roar and is unmistakable once you have heard it.
The virtual device carries only what djay Pro sends it, which is the point.
Microphone
djay Pro's microphone input mixes into its master output, so a microphone plugged into your interface and enabled in djay Pro reaches the stream through the same path as the music.
If you would rather keep the microphone out of djay Pro, BUTT can mix a second input alongside the virtual device — set the microphone as the primary input and the virtual cable as the secondary, with the levels set so the voice sits above the music without burying it.
Going live
Connect in BUTT. Studio sees the source, ducks automation and shows the live banner. Stop in BUTT to end the show; automation resumes from the current schedule position.
Frequently asked questions
Can I broadcast from djay Pro on an iPad?
Not directly, and not usefully. iPadOS has no virtual audio device of this kind, so the practical route is a hardware output from the iPad into a computer or an audio interface, and an encoder there.
Will streaming-service tracks play on the stream?
Music from a subscription streaming service integrated into djay Pro is licensed for personal performance, not for retransmission — rebroadcasting it is a licensing problem regardless of whether the audio reaches the encoder. Broadcast from files you have the rights to play.
Does the virtual device reduce audio quality?
No. BlackHole and VB-Audio Cable pass digital audio between applications without re-encoding. Anything audible on this path is a sample-rate mismatch, not the cable: keep djay Pro, the virtual device and the encoder all at 44100 Hz.
Is there a DJ application that streams without this?
Yes — Mixxx and VirtualDJ both have Icecast encoders built in. If the virtual-device chain is more moving parts than you want on a show night, Mixxx is free and connects directly.
